Astrid Sims is a filmmaker, painter, and multidisciplinary artist from New Orleans, Louisiana. A graduate of the Savannah College of Art and Design (SCAD) with a B.F.A. in Film, she is an award-winning director and writer whose work explores identity, Black life, girlhood, and memory across various genres from horror to coming-of- age. She makes sure to put unheard voices at the forefront.
Astrid's work spans film, television, and the visual arts. She received the 2026 Gracie Award for Director (TV – Student) from the Alliance for Women in Media in recognition of her directing work on chefATL. She also wrote the Emmy Award-winning chefATL episode "Global Soul," which earned a 2026 Southeast Emmy Award for Lifestyle – Long Form Content. Throughout her filmmaking career, she has worked across every stage of production, serving as a director, writer, production designer, art director, first assistant director, and more on numerous projects. This breadth of experience informs her collaborative approach and deep understanding of cinematic storytelling.
In addition to her film practice, Astrid is a painter whose work draws from her memory of childhood. Across both mediums, she creates work that is both deeply personal and universally resonant.
As an artist with Eternal Seeds, a New Orleans nonprofit dedicated to equipping emerging artists with the tools to become leaders and visionaries for a more equitable and creative world. Astrid develops her own artistic practice while mentoring young artists and fostering the next generation of storytellers. Whether behind the camera or in the studio, she is committed to creating work that preserves memory, celebrates community, and expands the possibilities of storytelling.
